Fully funded 🇬🇧 Study in United Kingdom 1 year

Commonwealth Master's Scholarship

A fully funded UK Master's for people who cannot otherwise afford to study abroad — but you must be nominated, not just apply.

Offered by Commonwealth Scholarship Commission in the UK (funded by the UK FCDO)

The Commonwealth Master's Scholarship pays for a full taught Master's in the UK for people from eligible Commonwealth countries who could not otherwise afford it. It is funded by the UK government and aimed squarely at people who will go home and work on development. There is one thing that catches most people out: you cannot apply to the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission on its own. You must send an application to the CSC AND be nominated by a body in your own country — usually a government ministry. Each nominating body runs its own selection and often closes earlier than the CSC does. If you only do half of this, your application will not be considered.

Deadline — last day to apply

20 October 2026

at 15:00 UTC

The CSC deadline is 16:00 BST on 20 October 2026 — that is 16:00 in Lagos and Abuja, and 18:00 in Nairobi and Kampala. WARNING: your national nominating agency will almost certainly set an EARLIER deadline of its own, sometimes by several weeks. Check your agency's date first and work backwards from that one, not from this one.

Details checked against the official source on 13 August 2026. Rules change every year — always confirm on the official page before you apply.

TontonAfriJobs is not connected to this scholarship and never charges any fee. You can apply yourself, for free, using the steps below. Nobody needs to apply on your behalf.

What the scholarship pays for

Your full tuition fees — paid directly to the university, so you never owe any part of it
A living allowance of £1,712 per month, or £2,000 per month if your university is in the London area
Return economy airfare from your home country to the UK at the start and end of the award
A study travel grant towards study-related travel inside the UK or overseas
Child allowance of £622 per month for a first child, and £154 per month for a second and third child under 16 — but only if you are widowed, divorced or a single parent, and your children live with you in the UK
A full needs assessment and extra financial support if you tell them you have a disability

What you still pay for yourself

Airfares for your husband, wife, partner or children
Any journey made before your award is officially confirmed
The true cost of keeping a family in the UK — the family allowances are a contribution only, and you must be able to top them up yourself
Any other scholarship covering the same costs — you cannot hold two at once

Find your country

Only these African countries are eligible for the Commonwealth Master's Scholarship. Tap your country to jump straight to your national nominating agency's contact details on the CSC site — that is the office you must apply through. Note that Cameroon is NOT on the CSC's eligible list for this award, even though it appears on the nominating agency page for other programmes.

Eligible, but read this first

Gabon

Gabon is on the eligible country list, but the CSC lists no national nominating agency for it. The only listed nominator covering Gabon is the Commonwealth Disabled People's Forum, which nominates disabled candidates only. If you are not applying through that route, contact the CSC before you spend time on an application.

Togo

Togo is on the eligible country list, but the CSC lists no national nominating agency for it. The only listed nominator covering Togo is the Commonwealth Disabled People's Forum, which nominates disabled candidates only. If you are not applying through that route, contact the CSC before you spend time on an application.

Can I apply?

You need to be able to tick every box below. Each one links to the official page that states the rule.

  • You are a citizen of, or have refugee status granted by, an eligible Commonwealth country — or you are a British Protected Person. Official eligible countries
  • You are permanently resident in an eligible Commonwealth country. Applicant eligibility
  • By September 2027 you hold at least an upper second-class (2:1) bachelor's degree — or a lower second-class (2:2) degree plus a relevant postgraduate qualification, usually a Master's. Academic requirement
  • You genuinely could not afford to study in the UK without this scholarship. This is a real selection criterion, not a formality — the award exists for people who have no other way to fund it. Selection criteria
  • There is NO age limit for this scholarship. If you were turned away from another award for being too old, this one is still open to you. Applicant eligibility
  • Disabled applicants who do not hold a 2:1 may still be considered through the Commonwealth Disabled People's Forum, which recognises barriers faced in education. Apply via CDPF
  • The CSC does not normally fund a second Master's degree. If you already hold one, read their conditions before applying. General conditions

How to apply, step by step

Do these in order. Every step links to the exact official page you need — you never have to guess, and you never need an agent.

  1. 1

Find your national nominating agency FIRST — before anything else

Tap your country in the list above. It opens the CSC page at your own country's agency, with its address, phone and email. Contact them and ask for their closing date and their own extra requirements. Their deadline is usually earlier than the CSC's, and everything else depends on it.

    All nominating agencies
  2. 2

    Choose your UK university course

You need a full-time taught Master's at a UK university, starting September or October 2027. Check the CSC's partner universities first, because the CSC agrees fees directly with them.

  3. 3

Register on CSC Central and start the form early

Applications open on 8 September 2026. The system uses two-factor authentication, so you need either a smartphone or a second email address to register. Save often — refreshing the browser logs you out and loses anything unsaved.

    Apply on CSC Central
  4. 4

Write your answers in a separate document first

The CSC itself recommends preparing your answers outside the system and pasting them in once finished. You cannot edit an application after submitting it, so nothing should be written for the first time inside the form.

    Completing the form
  5. 5

Prepare your Development Impact statement in four parts

This is the heart of the application. You must explain the development problem at global, national and local level; how you will use the skills afterwards; what will actually change and over what timeframe; and who will benefit. Vague ambitions score badly — be concrete about the change and the people.

    What the form asks
  6. 6

Line up three referees, one of them your current employer

You must name three referees who can speak to both your ability to benefit from study in the UK and your ability to deliver development impact at home. At least two references must be included with the application, so ask them weeks in advance.

    Supporting documentation
  7. 7

Submit to BOTH the CSC and your nominating agency

This is where most applications die. Submitting only to the CSC, or only to your agency, means you will not be considered. Do both, and submit days early — the system is heavily loaded near the deadline and late applications are never accepted.

    How to apply
  8. 8

Wait for the result by July 2027

The CSC expects to tell applicants the outcome by July 2027, for study beginning that September or October. Keep your Application Reference Number email safe — you need it to view your submitted application.

Papers you need to prepare

Start gathering these early — some take weeks to get.

Your bachelor's degree certificate and full transcripts

Must show you reached at least a 2:1 standard, or a 2:2 plus a Master's.

Three referees, including your current employer

At least two references must be submitted with the application itself.

Your Development Impact statement

Four parts: the development issue, how you will use the skills, what will change and when, and who benefits.

Employment history

You must explain how each role is relevant to the course you want to study.

Publications and prizes

You may list up to 10. Leave it blank if you have none — it is not required.

A valid passport or national ID

Proves your citizenship and permanent residence in an eligible country.

English test — which one to take

An English test proves you can study in English. You take it at a test centre (or sometimes at home), pay a fee, and receive a score. Book directly on the official website below — never pay an agent to book it for you.

IELTS Academic

The CSC itself does not set an English test. Your UK university does, and most accept IELTS Academic.

Do not pay for a test before checking your university's requirement — if you already studied a degree taught in English, some universities waive it completely.

Questions people ask

What is the deadline for the Commonwealth Master's Scholarship?

Applications for the Commonwealth Master's Scholarship for 2027/28 open on 8 September 2026 and close at 16:00 BST on 20 October 2026, for study in the UK starting in September or October 2027. Your national nominating agency usually sets its own earlier deadline, so confirm that date with your agency first — the CSC does not accept late applications.

Can I apply for a Commonwealth Scholarship directly?

No. The Commonwealth Scholarship Commission does not accept direct applications for Commonwealth Master's Scholarships. You must submit an application to the CSC through CSC Central and separately be nominated by a national nominating agency in your country, or by an approved NGO or charitable body. An application made to only one of the two will not be considered.

Which African countries are eligible for the Commonwealth Master's Scholarship?

19 African countries are eligible for the Commonwealth Master's Scholarship: Botswana, Eswatini, Gabon, The Gambia, Ghana, Kenya, Lesotho, Malawi, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, Nigeria, Rwanda, Sierra Leone, South Africa, Tanzania, Togo, Uganda and Zambia. Cameroon is not on the eligible list for this award. Gabon and Togo are eligible but have no national nominating agency listed, so applicants there have no general nomination route.

How much is the Commonwealth Scholarship monthly allowance?

The Commonwealth Master's Scholarship pays a living allowance of £1,712 per month, rising to £2,000 per month if your university is in the London metropolitan area. It also covers your full tuition fees, return economy airfare, and a study travel grant. Single parents, widowed or divorced scholars receive £622 per month for a first child and £154 per month for a second and third child under 16.

Is there an age limit for the Commonwealth Master's Scholarship?

No. The Commonwealth Scholarship Commission states there is no age limit for its applications. This makes it one of the few fully funded UK Master's awards open to older applicants, unlike schemes such as the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program, which caps applicants at 35.

What grade do I need for a Commonwealth Master's Scholarship?

You need an upper second-class (2:1) bachelor's degree by September 2027, or a lower second-class (2:2) degree combined with a relevant postgraduate qualification, usually a Master's. Disabled applicants who do not hold a 2:1 may still be nominated through the Commonwealth Disabled People's Forum, which takes into account barriers faced during education.

Does the Commonwealth Scholarship cost money to apply for?

No. The Commonwealth Master's Scholarship is free to apply for, through the CSC Central system and your national nominating agency. Neither the CSC nor a government nominating agency charges an application fee, and no agent can nominate you or influence the selection.

Tips that genuinely improve your chances

  • Contact your nominating agency in the first week applications open. Their deadline, not the CSC's, is the one that will actually cut you off.
  • The Development Impact statement decides this award. Write about a specific problem you have already worked on, and name the people who will benefit.
  • Being unable to afford UK study is a genuine criterion here — do not hide your financial situation in the way you might for other scholarships.
  • Prepare every long answer in a separate document. You cannot edit the form after submitting, and refreshing the page destroys unsaved work.
  • Ask your employer for a reference early. One of your three referees must be your current employer if you are working.

Protect yourself from scams

Commonwealth Scholarships are free to apply for. Applications are only accepted through CSC Central and your official national nominating agency — which is a government ministry, not a private office. Nobody can sell you a nomination, and no agent has influence over CSC selection. If someone asks you to pay for a nomination, a form, or a "guaranteed" place, it is a scam.
